Childhood Development: Areas to Improve

Childhood Development: Areas to Improve

As a caring and involved (read: Kiasu) parent, we all want to assist in our child's development in any way we can. Parental authorities differ slightly on how to organize childhood development. In today’s parenthood, one of the main issues facing us all is about intelligence and how it relates to the "Nature versus Nurture" debate.
.
I caught up with my old schoolmates last weekend and, as most of them are parents, the topic inevitably fall to, at the chagrin of our unmarried friends, which school we would like to send our kids to. The discussion than led to further questions being tossed around, “Is it the education or is it the genes that influence a child’s intelligence.” This was followed by someone shouting across the table “If your child is dependent on your genes than you’re screwed.”  Laughter ensued all round. The topic did not reach a conclusion by the end of the night.
.
So. Is it the genes or the education that has a greater impact on a child's intelligence?
The development of childhood ability leads to learning new knowledge and to process, understand, and apply acquired knowledge to different ends. Developing all areas of a child’s ability helps to improve capacity for mental activities such as thinking, interpreting, comparing and contrasting, sequencing, and visualizing. This can also help our children master specific content knowledge relating to terminology, science, and so forth.
.
They are so many areas in a child’s life that needs special attention. In as much as we want the best for them, we also need to learn to put them in the right path at any given time. We all need to identify these areas and help them grow in their chosen endeavors.
.
• Kids learn differently: Every child is special. Parents need to understand that some kids learn more by seeing, while others learn better by seeing and doing. Even children growing up in a family with similar learning environment can learn at different speed and ways. The development of skills relating to playacting and using their curiosity to explore new ideas and possible solutions to problems.
.
• Education: The education and guidance we provide our kids are the most important factors in nearly all mental development. This also includes the support we give through other means. Take for example, when a parent provides his or her child with nursery school or baby products, the child's development can still be improved.
.
• Multiple Facets: A child's learning system could focus on multiple facets of the child's development, rather than just one of them. Instead, focus should be made to developing the child's total experience of the world. While it is essential for a child to develop his or her logical skills, mastering the skills required for language learning are just as important.
.
• Learning Experiences: This allows children to learn how various actions taken by them will affect several aspects of their intelligence. Developing this area allows a child to distinguish between different types of sensory input, processing those that are important and rejecting the ones that are not useful. This development relates to how children interact with other and how to behave.
.
• Nature and Nurture: The both of them are vital in influencing a child's intelligence. It cannot be reasonably argued that anyone is more important. While a child's genes certainly have reasonable influence on how smart he or she can become, nurturing is needed to mold these genes into a mind which is ready to learn, and is capable of learning.
.
With proper guidance and the blessing of good genes, our child might be the next Einstein (or the next Michael Kelso).
.
And speaking of genetic…. What should you do to tame a child if he picks up your temper? Coincidentally, I talk about How to Control an Angry Child in my next article.
